On Nude Magazine Covers (Possibly NSWF?)

Wednesday, July 11th, 2012
By Glinda

This is professional basketball player (and Olympic team member) Candace Parker.

She is obviously very beautiful and in fantastic shape.  She has even had a baby, which makes me look down at my own decidedly non-six pack belly and give a sigh.

And even though she is gorgeous and talented and could kick anyone’s butt at any time, I can’t help but dislike the cover. (Maybe she should just go to Joseph M’s and get a nice Alice by Temperley coverup.

Maybe I am a complete prude.  It’s OK if you tell me I am, I’ll pretty much agree with you.

When it comes to a nude woman on the cover of a mainstream magazine, I tend to flip flop.  I think that women should embrace their bodies and that nudity isn’t something to be ashamed of.  But then I wonder if women who pose this way are truly empowering themselves, or if they are simply cogs in the machine to sell magazines.

Discuss?

Should She or Shouldn’t She: Lash Extensions

Friday, June 29th, 2012
By Glinda

Beauteous reader Klee sent in the following question:

I’ll be vacationing with the new BF and was curious about lash extensions.  Will they last 6 weeks? My lashes are naturally blond, do they dye my lashes first to match? Is it worth it? Any insight on the decision would help.

Well, I was able to do some research on lash extensions, and here are the pros and cons I came up with.

Pros:

By pretty much all accounts, they look absolutely gorgeous.  Like, breathtakingly gorgeous.

Those that had lash extensions done appreciated not having to fuss with the whole mascara routine.

Cons:

The application process is a long one, about two hours or so.  Many people found it difficult and somewhat claustrophobic.

It is possible to have an allergic reaction to the adhesive.

Depending on the skill of the technician, the lashes can last from two to three weeks.

Upkeep on extensions is very expensive, if you intend to keep them longer than three weeks.

You must be selective with eye makeup, and eyeliner is frowned upon.

One unanticipated side effect for some was that the extensions would actually brush against sunglasses/glasses and they found that to be an uncomfortable sensation.

Exposure to sweat and water can reduce the effectiveness of the adhesive.

You must be careful in choosing the type of lashes that are to be applied, it can be too much of a good thing if they are too long or too thick.

As for matching your natural lashes, I didn’t see anything that implied any dyeing beforehand.  I’m guessing that is either a separate procedure, or possibly unnecessary due to the awesomeness of the fake ones.

To me, the pros are outweighing the cons.  I could see getting them for a very special occasion such as a wedding, but unless your bank account can stand a steady draining, then I’m not sure they are worth it.  Although it might be easy for me to say that as I have fairly decent lashes.

But on the other of the hands, (as the boss would say) the results are said to be fairly stunning.

Anyone else have thoughts?  Anyone had them done?  Or know someone that has?

Tuesday Beauty Poll

What can I say?  My computer hates me.

Apologies for the absence, and regular posting commencing in 5, 4, 3, 2, 1…

47% of you hated Amanda Seyfried’s choice of bright orange lip color, 28% loved it, and 23% felt her lips belonged at an event called Electric Daisy Lollapalooza instead of an award show.  I was actually sort of ambivalent about them.  Her makeup was very well done, and I almost kind of liked how much her lips popped.  But, orange!

Ah well, it’s just lip color, is it not?

Summer is already here and I want to know all about your relationship with self tanners…

Raise Your Hand

If you’re guilty of doing one of these so-called “bad skin habits.”

OK, well, I can see how going without sunscreen and baking in the sun aren’t good things.  But how many people actually apply products with such a heavy hand that they cause problems?

And, you will have to pry my hot showers and exfoliators out of my red, inflamed hands.

Tuesday Beauty Poll

By Glinda

I hope your holiday weekend was better than mine, as I wept copious tears from being reprimanded not once, but twice, for misspelling the word “fluorescent” on last week’s poll.  Damn these embedded polls and the lack of spellchecking thereof!  And why yes, yes I was too busy dealing with sick husbands and children to look the word up, so you will have to comfort yourself with the fact that I don’t think I will ever misspell that word again, simply due to trauma.

I kid, of course.

Well, it seems that not ONE PERSON is completely into fluorescent makeup, which I find interesting, indeed.   48% of you deemed it a trend worthy of only your nails, if that.  17% denied it a place at all, and 33% of you were bitter that it managed to resurrect itself from the 80’s.

Things I Don’t Do: Hair Extensions

I don’t really know why, either.

It has truly never crossed my mind to put any kind of extensions into my hair, even though I have to say that my hair is not exactly luxurious.

I don’t judge anyone that does put them in, and most of the time, unless they are colored, I don’t even know that they have them in at all.  I just tend to automatically be jealous of all the people with long, beautiful hair and don’t stop to pause to think if it’s real or not.

I know that it’s a big Hollywood thing, and I know lots of regular people do it just to have a little fun or add some color that can be instantly removed.

I guess I’m neither glamorous OR a good time.

Just ask my kids.

What’s New: Sephora Pantone Universe Palette, and a Little Mini-Controversy

Thursday, May 17th, 2012
By Glinda

I got an email today about this new Sephora “nature inspired” palette.  Right now only V.I.B’s (Very Important Beauty Insider=You spend entirely too much money at Sephora)  can purchase it, so I went to look and see what the fuss was about.

Well, when I looked in the comments section, there are a bunch of annoyed V.I.B’s who learned that other (we assume randomly selected, although no one will cop out) V.I.B’s got this palette for free and are giving it wonderful reviews.

The non-comped people are saying that of course the freebie-receivers are only saying nice things about it, presumably in the hope that they will continue getting free things.  Some of them are even saying that since Sephora was so unfair in their goodie distribution process, they will boycott the product altogether.

Hmmm.

I can sort of see their point, but really, it’s just a palette, people!  It certainly wasn’t possible to send a free one to every single V.I.B., and as long as the process was random, I guess I’m OK with it.

What about you? Fair or unfair? A big ado about nothing?

Monday Beauty Poll

By Glinda

39% of you think Christina Ricci’s Met Gala outfit is the best of the cray-cray, which I have to say is surprising.  23% backed Karolina Kurkova, and 20% of you were rooting for fabulous dame Linda Fargo.  I personally voted for Florence Welch’s Alexander McQueen.

Meanwhile, Ivanka Trump’s big bangs, which made their debut at the very same event, are prompting some debate.

Tuesday Beauty Poll

By Glinda

My last poll about spring beauty trends had 26% of you willing to give red lips a go, however I’m guessing that probably isn’t much of a departure for most of you.  21% said sheer rose lips sounded appealing, and the cat eye came in at 19%.  15% were game for the super smoky eye, but I’m a bit timid for that one.  Also, I’m afraid of looking like a raccoon.  And not a cute one.

Today I’m curious as to your sunscreen habits.

Searching For: Adele’s Grammy Lipstick

Friday, April 6th, 2012
By Glinda

Everyone’s friend raincoaster recently sent out a desperate call for help regarding Adele’s pinky-peach lipstick at her recent Grammy performance.

Not to keep bringing up NARS, but I suggested her lip color might be some combination of NARS Orgasm lip gloss/lipstick.

Anyone else have a theory?
