LOOK AT IT!  JUST LOOK AT IT!

Is it kitschy and over-the-top and completely unnecessary?

Of course! That’s why I want it!

Monday Beauty Poll

By Glinda

It was quite close, but SWINTON! won out over Angelina, with 58% to her 41%.  I think it was an awfully hard choice, actually, but I probably would have chosen Angelina just because she doesn’t normally look so great on the red carpet and she was throwing some serious face in that photo.  But my love for SWINTON! is undying.

I got a Sephora gift card for Christmas (surprising to no one) that is just sitting in my purse.  I’m thinking that instead of being all level-headed and practical, I’m going to throw caution to the wind and use the entire balance to completely splurge on one or two items.

How I Turned to the Dark Side, and Loved It

Wednesday, January 18th, 2012
By Glinda

When I first found out I was going to have a biopsy that came with major surgery, I was bummed.

I suddenly felt the need for change.

So where did I go?

Well, I still need to go to Sephora, but I went right to my hair salon.

I’d been falling into the trap of using a lighter dye on my hair in order to camouflage the gray.  The more gray that would come in, the lighter we would go.

It looked OK, but I was starting to get major zebra stripe once my hair started growing out, and I choose color weaving specifically to avoid that type of thing.

I looked at that dark band and bam! It hit me that instead of trying to play the blonde-ing game and winding up looking like an OC Housewife, perhaps it was time to return to my roots.  Literally.

We took my color much darker, and she did a very fine weave, as opposed to a chunkier one so that I would get the maximum amount of dark color.

If I do say so myself, it looks rather fabulous.

It brings out my skin tone more, my green eyes pop, and now I can venture toward darker eye and lip makeup without feeling like a painted trollop.

And can you see my grays?  Well yes, but they actually look kind of good and help to give my hair a nice dimension.

My young padawans, do not be afraid of the dark side!

It Needs to be All About Me. And You, Too.

I’ve never actually taken a spa break, but it certainly sounds like a fine idea indeed.

I’m a big believer in stress relief, I just haven’t found a way to make it work for me since my kids entered my life. Although now that I think about it, I really should find a way because I notice that I’m a happier mom when I get even a couple of hours to myself reading a book.  Who knows what could happen if I actually managed to pamper myself a little bit? Surely a Mother of the Year award would be within my grasp.

I remember my former (non-child) life when I would stay at high-end hotels and there upon the desk would be the spa “menu.”  You could choose from all kinds of heavenly-sounding spa treatments, from a hot stone massage to Ayurvedic treatments, which were so mysterious yet so very tempting.  However, there was always something else to do on those trips, and at the time, my husband would insist that we were not there to visit the spa.  If I had only known the stress that would be visited on me in later years, I would have dragged him there kicking and screaming, so as to build up some stress relief reserves.

For our recent 10th wedding anniversary, my husband suggested we go and get a couples massage.  Hallelujah, he has finally seen the light!  Forget the traditional gift of tin or aluminum, sign me up for warm oil poured on my forehead!

Does anyone have any favorite treatments they recommend for some spa newbies?

Things I Covet: One Nighty Nite Tonic Facial Mask

By Glinda

I’m always afraid to try new skin products because sometimes my face totally freaks out.  I never know when it’s going to happen, and since I have a horrible track record about returning things, I’m hesitant to make a big purchase.

However.

One Nighty Nite Tonic Facial Masks are eco-friendly, travel-friendly, and most importantly, have an extremely budget-friendly price.

Sold only online at Target.

Monday Beauty Poll

Monday, October 10th, 2011
By Glinda

Your views on beauty marks were pretty much an overwhelming, “meh.”  41% don’t care about them at all, and 25% said it depends on where they are located.  22% said they can add to someone’s beauty, while 8% disagreed.

Today’s poll is about a new place called Blushington that has opened up not too far from me, as described in this article.  Basically, it’s a place where you can go to get a professional makeup application without the pressure of a beauty counter.  They charge $35 per session, and have seven different options such as “sun-kissed beauty” to launch off for your personalized look.

Bad, Bad, Glinda

I’m sorry, my lovelies, for abandoning you.

But I decided to take advantage of the laxness allowed during the month of August, and I once I began rolling with it, it was a bit difficult to start writing again.  I kept telling myself, just one more day, Glinda.  It’ll be fine.

And so here we are.  In September.

However, I’m peppier than ever, and can’t wait to get back to dishing on the newest beauty-related stuff, including some reader suggestions.

I’d like to begin with something the lovely and awe-inspiring marvel said in the comments a while back:

When I got more tan than usual last summer, I  bought a slightly darker tone of the same brand of foundation and mixed it (during application) with the lighter one I used in winter. Sometime in October the tan faded and I went back to the unadulterated lighter one. Experts here can now explain why this was wrong!

My god woman!  You are in no way wrong!

In fact, I have always assumed that everyone adjusted their foundation according to their tans, no?  I mean, if you spend any time at all outdoors in the summer, you are likely to gain some sort of color, unless you walk around with a shroud around your body, and if you do, well kudos to you on a job well done keeping those UV rays off your skin.  But if you’re like me, you are going to county fairs and beaches and BBQ’s and somewhere along the way, your foundation no longer matches perfectly.

So, it’s time to play artist!  Mix those foundations to where they need to be!  One of my pet peeves is obviously mis-matching foundation because it really is not that hard to fix.

But the same thing can be said for almost any cosmetic.  Lipstick a little too dark?  By all means, grab a lip brush and lighten it up with another shade!  Same goes for too-intense eyeshadow or blush.  Professional makeup artists constantly apply custom shades, even nail polish mixes!

Messing around with makeup is one of the best parts of having it!  Use it to your fullest advantage.

Monday Beauty Poll

Last week I wanted to know the last time you made a fairly major change to your hair.  23% have done so in the last six months, while 28% did within the last year.  Of those people, a rather astounding 89% had no regrets about doing so.  Wow.  There must be lots of talented stylists out there!  Actually, you all were my inspiration when I went to my stylist last Friday.  I decided to bite the bullet and get some layers, which I haven’t done in over fifteen years.  At first I was a bit traumatized, but I think I’m slowly getting used to it.

25% changed their hairstyle two to four years ago, 11% five to nine years, 6% ten to fifteen, and 5% over fifteen years ago.  You know, there is something to be said for finding and keeping a style that works for you.  As long as you don’t look stuck in a time warp, stick with what you love.

Today’s question is something a friend of mine and I were talking about the other day.

Tuesday Beauty Poll

Tuesday, February 22nd, 2011
By Glinda

The Beauty Poll on a Tuesday? Why not? I don’t think I could bear to go two weeks in a row without running a new poll.

Yes, I’m that nosy.

The last poll wanted to know if you would still buy products from a company who had an employee outburst that doesn’t jive with your personal belief system.  45% of you said it depended on how influential that employee was within the company, although I think it is safe to assume that the person is fairly high-profile.  I mean, I don’t see a newspaper interviewing the junior marketing guy very often.  Although Jezebella had an interesting distinction, commenting,  “More so than how influential the person is, I would consider what the company’s response was to the person’s bad behavior.” Excellent point. 37% of you stated you would no longer buy from the company, and 16% said they would still buy the product.

I asked the poll question in direct response to something the lovely Queen of Sheba pointed out to me after I posted about Guerlain lipstick, which is what I linked to in the original poll post.  I was disgusted by what Mr. Guerlain had stated in his interview, but that didn’t stop me from buying Guerlain products.  As discussed in the comments section, Guerlain is no longer a family-run business and is run by mega-corp LVMH.  I consider the Guerlains to be no longer associated with the company, and thus, reasoned that I wasn’t acting against my principles by buying their product.  Or, maybe I’m just fooling myself.

As for today, I’m going to lean toward a more light-hearted subject.  I got so many interesting responses on my anti-waxing post, that I felt I needed to hear from all of you about the very important subject of how you personally choose to tend your lady-garden.  Yes, yes, it is definitely veering into TMI, but what is a little TMI amongst friends?  And besides, this is the internets!  Nobody will know how you voted! I get zero data on the votes, just the total.
