Monday Beauty Poll
By GlindaOctavia Spencer was voted best-dressed at the Oscars with a fairly commanding 29%, given how wide the field was. Milla Jovovich and Jessica Chastain tied for second place with 19%. I was looking at some other Oscar fashion polls, and was discouraged to see that Octavia wasn’t even a choice. Girl killed it on the red carpet, and I’m sorry that some people think that a woman with curves isn’t fashion-worthy.
Which segues nicely into my next question…

I don’t think more people are fat phobic than ever I think that it’s become more permissible to be rude about other people’s appearance in public than before. People who before would mutter rude things amongst themselves now shout it out loud and the people who would only think rude thigns now mutter amongst themselves and people who would be ashamed to think rude things about another persons’ appearance now let themselves think it.

Not only are people more fat phobic (and more openly fat phobic, a thing that wouldn’t be possible unless what I’m about to write next weren’t absolutely true), quite a great deal of money is spent to buy media that promotes fat phobia and fat hatred. The weight loss industry is a hugely profitable business, you don’t need anything to make astounding profits except a means to make people feel insecure. Media promoting weight loss through medications, surgery, shaming, and public humiliation also stands to make huge profits, and human beings are very easily lead to participate in it if it means they can avoid being targets of that hatred themselves. Aside from sports, I don’t think I’ve ever seen so many resources used up in creating fat shame.
