Opposite Sex Appreciation Day: Alan Cumming

Friday, November 30th, 2012
By Glinda

I know his pendulum has swung to the male side, but he definitely needs to look me up if it ever swings back to persons of the female persuasion.  I have no idea why Alan Cumming makes me feel a little tingly, as he is simply not my type, but he does.  He does indeed.

And of course the NSFW…

OSAD: Anthony Bourdain

Back when my husband and I were living large and had the Travel Channel, I stumbled across a little show called No Reservations.  I was instantly hooked.  Here was this man, who could write, cook, and look attractive on television.  We’ve got a winner!

He seems to be one of those people you either love or hate.  You think his smirk is adorable or you want to smack it off his face.  I’m in the former camp, of course.  I can see why people would be in the latter.  But whatever camp you are in, it’s hard to deny the man is muy talented.

And while for me, the main attractions are the man’s face and mind, there is a certain je ne sais qoi about the above photo that is nigh irresistible.

Monday Beauty Poll

By Glinda

81% of you choose to keep your lady garden in its natural color state.  18% of you are at least not rejecting the idea outright.  To me, if it is safe and not too much of a hassle, I don’t see it as anything but some harmless fun.

Some beauty/style website I happened upon featured the above hair style as a “no no” for women over 40.  They called this hairstyle “witchy poo.”

Save Ferris!

Sorry, I couldn’t resist the title.  I was in high school when Ferris Bueller came out, and my husband and I watched it not too long ago.  It holds up after all these years fantastically.

And speaking of aging fantastically, some recent pictures of the female lead from Ferris Bueller have been making the rounds on the interwebs.  Basically because Mia Sara looks damn good.  I can’t tell you how much I love her picture, the fact that she has crow’s feet/laugh lines and owns them!  She was lovely then, and is lovely now. This is what real, non-surgical aging looks like, people!  I want more!

Oooh La La, Marion Cotillard

Thirty six years old and truly stunning on this cover of French Vogue.

And perhaps they Photoshopped her face a bit, but thank goodness her hands look like normal human hands, not creepy-smooth like a doll’s.

Finally, Sharon Stone and I Have Something In Common

The HAIR, people, the HAIR!

I toss my hair up in a ponytail that looks exactly like that almost every day.  I don’t have bangs either, so I am totally feeling her Witch Hazel-esque wisps.

But both Witch Hazel and I would trade her perky boobs for our droopy ones in a hot second.

Things I Don’t Do: Colored Mascara

Wednesday, April 18th, 2012
By Glinda

I know, I know.  Based on my penchant for plummy-colored eyeliner, I’m fairly positive that I would look good in some plum mascara.

But, I’m not 100% positive.

And it just hasn’t really been on my radar to go and find a nice plum colored mascara and try it out.

I just might be scarred from the 80’s, when I did brave some blue mascara (SO HOT at the time) and thought I looked great.

Except in retrospect, I’m sure I didn’t.

I am well aware that the pigmentation on mascaras is much different here in the 2000’s, and the only time you are going to get neon blue mascara is if you are purposely looking for neon blue mascara.

As much as I hate to say it, I’m thinking that maybe 41 is a bit old for colored mascara.  A trend best left for the young ‘uns, as I had a go of it on the first round.

What say you?  Is age just a number and flaunt that purple mascara no matter what?

Don’t Tell Me, Madonna

Reportedly, Madonna has spent a bunch o’ money on some special type of facial machine.

I’ve always been an admirer of hers, but I wish she would drop the fight against aging.  It’s a no-win situation, my dear.

But it’s also a sad statement that if she DIDN’T attempt to turn back the clock, everybody would be all over her for having wrinkles. They already make fun of her body, which is very taut from her workout routine, but also a bit tendon-y for the same reason. Of course, she has never fit the “classic” beauty mold, but plenty of people find her attractive, and rightly so.

Being between a rock and a hard place is no fun.

Although I’m guessing that being mega-rich and famous might make up for that a little bit.

Tuesday Beauty Poll

Tuesday, April 10th, 2012
By Glinda

My last poll about spring beauty trends had 26% of you willing to give red lips a go, however I’m guessing that probably isn’t much of a departure for most of you.  21% said sheer rose lips sounded appealing, and the cat eye came in at 19%.  15% were game for the super smoky eye, but I’m a bit timid for that one.  Also, I’m afraid of looking like a raccoon.  And not a cute one.

Today I’m curious as to your sunscreen habits.

Things I Love: Dior Addict Lipstick

Thursday, March 29th, 2012
By Glinda

As I continue the inexorable aging process, I have come to find that matte lipsticks are the enemy.  The older I get, the chalkier they look against my skin, and that is a look that does me absolutely no favors.

Enter Dior Addict.

I recently purchased this product in Diorkiss, which is billed as a “sheer dark pink.”

Why yes, yes it was.

But what I like most about this lipstick is its reflective properties.  I adore the shimmer this product imparts, and nary a fleck of sparkle anywhere.

To me, this is the major drawback with the flecked lipsticks, wherein the flecks tend to migrate after a while.  Like, to right on my chin.  I love the way they look, but not necessarily after eating a sandwich.  Maybe it’s just me?

Which brings me back to Diorkiss.  This particular lipstick shade has no flecks, the shine is all from whatever secret (and with my luck, probably toxic) material they put into it.

But I love it still.

Due to its light nature, this product can and will wear off sooner than a matte lipstick.

It’s a tradeoff I’m willing to make.
