Cindy Sherman for MAC is, Ahhhh, Interesting

By Glinda

While I certainly respect Cindy Sherman as an artist and applaud MAC for doing something out of the box, I have to say the campaign for Fall Colours 2011 does not actually make me want to purchase the makeup.

Brave stuff, and what better way to show off the transformative power of make-up than a “one face, three different characters” approach? I love the ad for lots of reasons. But I have seen some terrible MAC ads (one by David LaChapelle of a woman painting her self with a pink lipstick while giggling maniacally comes to mind) that have made me avoid MAC in the past, so I can understand what you’re saying.

The colours? Fortunately they’re similar to shades in practically everybody’s fall 2011 palette (though when you’re dealing with such intense colour, pigmentation levels will vary according to manufacturer).

    Wow.
It’s art that exposes illusions rather than painting them for the customer, so yeah, I don’t see it selling very well.
I applaud them for doing something different. I usually avoid MAC, but this? This is so subversive it’s cool. If it comes to Tokyo I’m definitely checking it out. I wonder how it’d do here.
