Product Review: Sephora by OPI Nail Color

By Glinda

I had a nice little discount given to me by Sephora a few weeks back, and you know when you have to reach a certain amount of money and your’re just looking for some little thing to bridge the gap? Well, Sephora by OPI nail color was that item for me.

I chose “Make the First Mauve” which, as a name, is just a bit much for me. The color is kind of nice, a bit darker than I usually use on my hands, but it definitely grew on me. It’s a grey-ish purple, perfect for winter.

Part of the reason I so rarely use nail polish on my hands is that I don’t like spending the money for base and top coats, and I wash my hands a LOT. So even though it doesn’t make a whole lot of sense, I base my nail polish reviews on how long a polish lasts without any “help.”

Well, Sephora by OPI lasted less than a day before it started chipping. Yes, it’s a dark color. No, I didn’t use a top coat. But I truly think less than a day is pretty unacceptable no matter what.

I like the formula, I like the color, but I HATE the quality.

So, I must give this nail color a thumbs down.

I found that most nail polishes only last a day without chipping of you don’t use a base or top coat… OPI was the exception- I haven’t tried the Sephora by OPI, maybe now I won’t….

I’m pretty hard on my manicures, too–but I don’t think any paint will stick without a good base. So if it doesn’t go past 5 days when it’s put on with a good “bonder” base coat and topped with a simple top coat, then I’m not impressed with the polish at all. If it fails even after I’ve given it a good foundation and a bit of sustaining protection, what can I say? I have been fooled by pretty packaging, clever little names and out-of-the-ordinary colours before, and usually the biggest let downs are the “pricier” lines.

I’ve found that Sephora by OPI is actually one of the longest-lasting polishes for me, but I always use a base coat and a top coat. I know there are some polishes on the market that claim to have base and top coats “built in” so that you don’t need to use separate ones. Since Sephora by OPI does not make any such claims, it seems kind of unfair to say it’s a poor quality polish because it didn’t do what it never claimed to do in the first place.

Someone gave me one of these samples for Christmas, and I am with Glinda – not impressed! coverage was streaky, and chipping right away. I also did not use base and top coat, and did not expect much, but have done that before with better results – I think mine lasted less than one day.

  5. Glinda Says:

@Cat- I hear what you are saying, but I have used “regular” OPI nail polish without a base or top coat and have had MUCH better results.

  6. Cat Says:

That’s funny; I’ve had just the opposite results. I love my regular OPI polishes, but I’ve found Sephora by OPI to be just as good if not better. I wonder if they’ve recently changed the formula or something. I hope not!

I believe a polish that cost around ten dollars should last more than one day even without a base and top coat. There just seems to be a general decline in the quality of most products.
