Things I Don’t Do: Colored Mascara

By Glinda

I know, I know.  Based on my penchant for plummy-colored eyeliner, I’m fairly positive that I would look good in some plum mascara.

But, I’m not 100% positive.

And it just hasn’t really been on my radar to go and find a nice plum colored mascara and try it out.

I just might be scarred from the 80’s, when I did brave some blue mascara (SO HOT at the time) and thought I looked great.

Except in retrospect, I’m sure I didn’t.

I am well aware that the pigmentation on mascaras is much different here in the 2000’s, and the only time you are going to get neon blue mascara is if you are purposely looking for neon blue mascara.

As much as I hate to say it, I’m thinking that maybe 41 is a bit old for colored mascara.  A trend best left for the young ‘uns, as I had a go of it on the first round.

What say you?  Is age just a number and flaunt that purple mascara no matter what?

I wore a plum/red mascara in the eighties, and it could be subtle if I wanted it to be. It certainly looked a lot better on me than black (too heavy) or black/brown (too mousy). If I wanted to be dramatic then, I’d wear purple or cobalt blue. All of them were around back then, and all were pretty good.

But now, I wear a plum coloured mascara. I’m older than you are, too. If you’ve got green eyes it does wonders and it’s such a subtle application of colour all that really comes through is the vibrant colour of your iris. So your eyes just look prettier. Unless you’re going to wear eye colours to really dramatize the colours of your make-up, which is something I don’t do anymore.

I am about your age, have a beautiful navy mascara and you will have to pry that tube from my cold, dead hands before I give up wearing it. I have deep set, dark brown eyes and very fair skin, so the blue accentuates my eye color nicely without the harshness of a black mascara against the pale skin, or making the eyes look even MORE deep set. Jump on the colored mascara bandwagon! It’s great!

Do it! I don’t really believe in the too old for this or that, for the most part. Go to your local Sephora and get some. If you hate it or think it looks terrible just return it, no big deal. But I think you will love it. I have some, Smokey Lash by MUFE, and while I don’t wear it every day it’s fun to wear on occasion.

    Rock that colored mascara!

I’m 36 and have been wearing YSL purple mascara for years – it’s lovely. The colour is less heavy and more enhancing than plain black and (as I suffer from rather heavy brows that push my eyelids down a bit, which makes my eye make up tend to move) it looks a lot better it does transfer to the skin (like smudgy eyeliner). I’d recommend.

I was afraid too to wear purple or navy blue mascara, but every time I use it, I get tons of compliments on my eyes. So give it a try!! I’m sure you’ll love it.
